Darrell Seale Abu Dhabi UAE: Sport and Community Activities

Darrell Seale is a U.S. Air Force veteran and retired international business executive who has made Abu Dhabi, UAE, his home. His activities outside work include sport, scuba instruction and involvement with nonprofit and community organizations.

Darrell Seale’s Abu Dhabi UAE interests include participating in local cultural and recreational activities and his building’s homeowners association. His volunteering background includes scuba-related organizations that work with wounded and disabled veterans.

Darrell Seale’s Participation in Sport and Volunteer Service

The Special Olympics World Games held in Abu Dhabi in 2019 were the first in the Middle East and North Africa. The emirate’s Crown Prince Court led the winning bid with an aim of increasing social inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities. The Games brought together 7,287 athletes from 172 programs competing in 24 sports. Darrell Seale’s participation at the Special Olympics included playing Unified Sports volleyball and presenting more than 50 medals to competitors.

Unified volleyball brings athletes with intellectual disabilities together with teammates without intellectual disabilities. The games involve three athletes and three partners on the court, with serving positions alternating between the two groups. Partners and athletes are also matched based on gender, age and comparable sporting ability. A medal awarded records a placing within a particular division rather than a ranking against every entrant in that sport.

Darrell Seale, now based in Abu Dhabi, UAE, received the President’s Volunteer Service Award in each year from 2010 through 2014. The national program recognizes qualifying unpaid service, with award levels based on recorded volunteering hours and age. He served on the Board of Directors of Divers 4 Heroes from 2010 to 2013 and on the National Kidney Foundation’s board from 2015 to 2017. The latter nonprofit supports kidney-health education and research, alongside services for patients and families.

Scuba Instruction Within a Broader Community Profile

Darrell Seale has taught scuba diving since 1999 and holds instructor credentials from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) and Scuba Diving International (SDI). He has certified more than 300 students and completed over 2,500 dives.

Seale co-founded Patriot Divers, a U.S. nonprofit that used scuba diving to support wounded and disabled veterans. He served as its vice president and an instructor from 2014 to 2018. He also volunteered as an instructor with Divers 4 Heroes, including during a diving trip involving veterans.

Darrell Seale’s scuba instruction in Abu Dhabi, UAE is a continuation of earlier organizational work in diving. This included membership on the Lockheed Martin Dive Club’s Board of Directors from 2009 to 2014.

Board Service and Participation Close to Home

Darrell Seale participates in his Abu Dhabi building’s homeowners association. From 2004 to 2008, he served on the Lonesome Dove Estates Homeowners Association board. The association addresses common facilities in jointly owned buildings, the use of service charges and the responsibilities of property management companies. It also provides for owners’ committees that can bring shared-property concerns to management and regulatory authorities.

From December 2018 through June 2019, he served on the Board of Directors of the American Chamber of Commerce Abu Dhabi. Established in 1986, the nonprofit association promotes U.S.–UAE commerce and investment. Its activities include business education and networking, as well as discussions of commercial issues affecting companies operating between the two countries. Membership includes corporations, smaller businesses and individual professionals with commercial interests in the UAE and the United States.

Darrell Seale joined Exechon Enterprises’ Board of Directors in 2015. The Abu Dhabi venture was established by Lockheed Martin, Sweden’s Exechon AB and the UAE’s Injaz National to develop advanced machining technology.  Exechon is involved with parallel kinematics machining, which uses linked mechanisms to position cutting tools precisely. Intended industrial applications included manufacturing for aerospace, defense and automotive products.

From Professional Relocation to Community Connection

Lockheed Martin asked Darrell Seale to relocate to Abu Dhabi in 2014 during his aerospace and defense career. He had previously served as a United States Air Force officer and subsequently moved into senior leadership roles in civilian industry. After retiring from international business, he remained in Abu Dhabi.

Seale became a member of the Houston–Abu Dhabi Sister City Association in January 2016. This program supports commercial, cultural, educational and humanitarian exchanges for civic engagement and people-to-people cooperation purposes.

Seale graduated cum laude from Oregon State University in 1991 with a degree in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering and a co-major in Aerospace Studies. He later earned a Master of Science in Engineering Management from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and completed the Advanced Program Manager Course at Defense Acquisition University in 1998.

He has visited 142 countries and is a Mensa member. Mensa admits individuals whose qualifying score places them in the top two percent on an accepted, properly administered intelligence test.
