Before Dawn
Design: Romare Bearden
Fabrication:
Crovatto Mosaics, Italy
Just inside the doors of Charlotte's Public Library, Main Branch, is one of the the strongest mosaic treasures in the region. It's pretty much an unintentional secret, and I can't even find a photograph on the web. Until I can, this will have to do.
After Charlotte native Bearden's death, his widow selected this 12" x 18" collage to be recreated in smalti by Crovatto Mosaics in Spilimbergo, Italy. The masterpiece is 9 feet tall and 13.5 feet wide. A NYC social worker for thirty years, Bearden's art speaks to the breadth of human experience.
Main Library, 310 N. Tryon Street, a straight 1.25 mile shot from Ciel Gallery.
