Firebird, or Disco Chicken, as some not-so-affectionately call her, was created by French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle in 1991 and now graces the entrance of The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. The building was designed by Mario Butto, and the collection focuses on mid-century modernism.
Firebird's original title, by the way, was The Great Firebird on an Arch, which changes the perspective rather dramatically, erasing images of bulbous bellbottoms on this 17.5 foot mirrored mosaic sculpture.
Firebird and the Bechtler are located at 420 South Tryon Street, a straight 3/4 mile shot from Ciel Gallery. More information
